Manual and/or CNC Grinding

GRND01 – Surface Grinding for Metalworking
192 hrs.

Students will gain a basic understanding of surface grinding. Grinding of flat, parallel, and perpendicular planes as well as angles will be covered in detail through lecture and grinding laboratory projects. Introduction to radii installation, side wheeling, and Comparator usage are some of the additional applications that will also be taught. Students will make Grinder’s blocks, parallels, and fixtures, which will be used throughout the course. Various grinding wheels, grinding and inspection methods, and workholding fixtures will be covered, along with proper applications. PREREQUISITE: MEAS01
REQUIRED TEXT:
Erik Oberg, et al. Machinery's Handbook. 27th Edition. New York: Industrial Press, 2005.

NIMSG0101 – NIMS Surface Grinding, Level I
41.5 hrs. lecture/lab

Text Box: The student will demonstrate the understanding and grinding of flat, parallel, and perpendicular planes as well as angles and how these features relate to geometric characteristics. Radii installation, surface finish, side wheeling, wheel balancing, Pedestal Grinder, Wet Grinder and Comparator usage are some of the additional applications that will also be taught. Various grinding wheels, grinding and inspection methods, and workholding fixtures will be covered, along with proper applications. Students will be shown safe grinding practices throughout this course. Students will earn either the NIMS Surface Grinder, Level I credential. PREREQUISITES:  MEAS01
NOTE: Students who have completed GRND01 but have not completed the NIMS Level 1 project are given 2 classes (approx. 6 hours) to complete the project.

NIMSG0201 – NIMS Surface Grinding, Level II
41.5 hrs. lecture/lab

The Student will demonstrate a more detailed understanding of flat, parallel, and perpendicular planes, angles, slots, holes, and an edge, and how these features relate to geometric characteristics. Continued topics of review will be; grinding wheel selection, grinding methods, speeds and feeds, surface finish requirements, and grinding wheel troubleshooting. Students will also be given the opportunity to utilize Superabrasive wheels as well as Conventional wheels when given a variety of ferrous and non-ferrous materials to grind. External and Internal Radii installation will be practiced. Setup and utilization of a Cylindrical Grinder will be performed as well as additional knowledge of other cylindrical type equipment. Students will be shown safe grinding practices and proper Workholding techniques throughout this course. Students will earn either the NIMS Surface Grinder, Level II credential. PREREQUISITES:  NIMSG01, GD&T01
